Weekly Email 8: There's No Life Like Island Life

Wow another week already! Time flies! Here’s some funny moments to start things off well ;)

• Right now in Tahiti it’s « winter ». It’s like 80 and sunny and I’ll be super hot and then people are walking around at night with winter coats hahah and they’re like aren’t you cold?? And it just makes me laugh because I’m thinking about back home and how this is the first time in my life that I can wear a t shirt in October 
• My second day here this random guy on the street saw me and my companion and was like « You’re Mormon missionaries? You’re too pretty to be Mormon! » and then he laughed. Thank you? Hahaha definitely never heard that before
• People here drink snow cone syrup mixed with water and call it juice. I had no idea that was a thing. Also the sandwich bread I buy at the store has no crust and is cut in perfect squares which is funny. Also Sour Patch Kids are called Very Bad Kids instead hahah 
• The bug spray the mission gave us actually smells so good! I didn’t know that was possible! I would legit wear it as perfume
• One of the members here has a dog called Tequila
• The door of the washing machine at our house is broken so we have to open it with a bent clothes hanger which is pretty funny. It took me forever to figure out how to do it without Soeur Miller helping me but now I can do it! Woooo 
• One of the members here jokingly asked if my eyes are fake. I’m pretty sure I’m the only person on this island who doesn’t have brown eyes 
• People here are always listening to these weird remixes of the Moana soundtrack hahah 
• As predicted, my last name is difficult for people to pronounce and remember. At least one of the 7 year olds at church can say it right 
• Me and Soeur Miller explained to one of our amis what cinnamon rolls and brownies are. She had never heard of them before! 

This week on Huahine: 

• We had a ward activity on Saturday where we cooked uru (breadfruit)! It was super cool! We cooked them on fire pits next to the beach. I’m pretty mad because apparently a whale jumped out of the ocean water and I missed it
• When I flew to Huahine I could only bring my backpack and carry on. My suitcases finally came by boat on Wednesday and it was the best day ever. Now I can stop wearing the same 4 outfits on repeat!
• Every Tuesday me and Soeur Miller get to teach English Class! Every Friday we also have a volleyball activity and lots of nonmembers come which is great!
• So it turns out that real Italians live down the street from me and they own a pizza truck!!!! I’m so excited! I went to go talk to them Saturday but they were busy so I’m going to go back another time!
• The other day me and Soeur Miller got lunch at a restaurant since one of the members works there. We had a lesson right after and the woman we had it with made us casse-croutes (sandwiches on baguette) that I swear were a foot long. I was super full from lunch but I couldn’t say no plus casse-croutes are wicked good. I thought I was going to explode but luckily I fit it all in my stomach! 
• Teaching has been kind of hard for me because since I was fast tracked in the MTC, there’s a lot of lessons I never taught in French. So it’s all new to me and there’s a lot of vocab I don’t know and I kind of just have to learn as I go. I’m trying my best though and I know that as time passes I’ll be able to get it down
• Understanding people is getting easier although it’s really frustrating for me to not be able to respond how I want to. I love talking to people and there’s so many jokes I want to make or things I want to say, but I can’t because I don’t know French well enough. So most of the times I’m pretty quiet which I really hate because I’m not a quiet person! I’m someone who is good at writing and speaking in English, so I’m used to being able to express myself eloquently. It’s really hard to be speaking a foreign language and to realize mid-sentence I don’t know enough vocab words to complete my thoughts or have to pause to conjugate something in my head. I’m not used to having to struggle to say something or to not be able to express myself. So that’s been really hard for me but I’m just trying to be patient. I know learning a language takes time and that it’s like this for most people in the beginning. I know God will help me! With God weak things can be made strong, and I know that He can make up for whatever we lack. Even though it’s hard right now I know I just have to keep pressing forward. One day there won’t be a language barrier anymore and I’m looking forward to that! 
• So for those wondering, people here speak Tahitian but they also speak and understand French. The older people and the middle aged people often speak to each other in Tahitian. I don’t understand most of it, I wish I did, but I hope that with time and study that I will one day be able to! But right now I need to focus on getting better at French so that’s what I’m working on right now. 
• Today me and Soeur Miller are going with the Elders to one of the motus (small islands)! I’m really excited, it should be fun!

Life here on Huahine is awesome! It is so beautiful and the people are super kind and generous. It’s sad though to be far away from the rest of the missionaries on Tahiti and the other islands, and we don’t get to join them for conferences and stuff :( but Soeur Miller is super awesome! We’re homies and there’s never a dull moment so I feel blessed to have her as my trainer and companion. Also our amis are awesome, and we’re getting close to fixing some baptismal dates! I love Huahine and I’m lucky to be here! 

There’s a chance my p day might be getting moved to Wednesday next week so don’t be alarmed if I don’t write next Monday! 

I just want to end by saying that I know Heavenly Father is there and that He loves us! I got to teach one of our amis about prayer this week. I love prayer because it truly is a conversation with God. We don’t need to memorize anything, we just speak straight from the heart. We can pray to God about anything, anywhere. Someone once told me to pray to God like I’m talking to my best friend, so that’s what I do! I tell him about everything in my life! School, work, mission, family, friends, guys, worries, fears, happy things, you name it. God loves us and wants to hear from us. I know He listens and I know He answers. You can receive so much strength and help with problems in your life through prayer. I have seen it time and time again in my life. Since I was a little kid I have always made sure to pray every night before bed. Make it a priority! And any time you need help or direction with something, God is only one prayer away. How cool is that?

Un'altra settimana è passata già! Il tempo vola! Ecco alcune situazioni da ridere per cominciare bene ;)

• Al  momento a Tahiti è "inverno". Ci sono 27C e c'é il sole e sento molto caldo e qui di sera la persone vanno in giro con le giacche invernali ahahah e mi fanno " Ma non hai freddo??" Il che mi fa ridere perché sto pensando a casa e a come questa sia la prima volta in vita mia che indosso una maglietta ad ottobre.
• Nel secondo giorno che ero qui un tipo ha visto me e la mia collega per strada e fa "Siete missionarie Mormoni? Siete troppo carine per essere Mormoni!" e poi si è messo a ridere. Scusi? Ahahah, sicuramente non l'avevo mai sentito dire prima.
• Qui si beve la granita di sciroppo mischiata con l'acqua e la chiamano succo. Non avevo idea che questa cosa esistesse. E poi il pane per fare i sandwich che compro al negozio non ha la crosta ed è tagliato a quadrati perfetti il che è buffo. Inoltre le caramelle Sour Patch Kids qui si chiamano Very Bad Kids ahahah (Nota : Sono caramelle un po' acri che si vendono negli Stati Uniti a sagoma di bambino)   http://www.listenherereviews.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/spin_prod_ec_776850601.jpg
• Lo spray contro le zanzare che ci ha dato la missione fa un così buon odore! Non sapevo che ciò fosse possibile! Potrei a ragione chiamarlo profumo.
• Uno dei membri qui ha un cane che si chiama Tequila.
• Lo sportello della lavatrice  di casa nostra è rotto quindi dobbiamo aprirlo con una gruccia piegata il che è buffo. C'è voluta una vita per riuscire a capire come aprirla senza Soeur Miller ma ora posso farlo da sola! Yeah!
• Uno dei membri qui scherzando mi ha chiesto se i miei occhi fossero finti. Sono proprio sicura che sia l'unica persona su quest'isola a non avere gli occhi marroni.
• Qui la gente ascolta sempre i remix strani della colonna sonora di Moana ahahah
• Come previsto il mio cognome qui è difficile da pronunciare e ricordare. Almeno uno dei bambini di 7 anni in chiesa lo sa dire bene.
• Io e Sorella Miller abbiamo spiegato ai nostri amis (simpatizzanti) cosa siano i cinnamon rolls e i brownies. Non ne aveva mai sentito parlare prima!

Questa settimana a Hauhine:

• Abbiamo avuto un'attività di rione sabato in chiesa in cui abbiamo cotto l'uru! (un tipo di frutto) È stato fortissimo! Li abbiamo cotti su dei falò vicino alla spiaggia. Sono seccata perché a quanto pare una balena è saltata fuori dal'oceano e non l'ho vista.
• Quando ho preso l'aereo per Hauhine ho potuto portare con me solo il mio zaino e il mio bagaglio a mano. Le mie valigie finalmente sono arrivate con la nave mercoledì ed è stato il giorno più bello. Ora posso smettere di indossare gli stessi 4 vestiti a rotazione!
• Ogni martedì io e Sorella Miller insegnamo inglese! Ogni venerdì abbiamo anche un'attività di pallavolo e vengono un sacco di non membri, il che è bellissimo!
• Allora ho scoperto che dei veri italiani abitano in fondo alla mia strada e hanno un camioncino dove fanno la pizza!!!! Sono così contenta! Sono andata a parlare con loro sabato ma avevano da fare così ci tornerò un'altra volta!
• L'altro giorno io e sorella Miller abbiamo pranzato ad un ristorante poiché uno dei membri vive lì. Abbiamo insegnato subito dopo e la donna a cui abbiamo insegnato ha fatto per noi casse-croutes (panini con gli sfilatini) che giuro erano lunghi 30 cm. Ero già piena per il pranzo ma non potevo dire di no e poi i casse-croute sono buonissimi. Pensavo che sarei esplosa ma fortunatamente ho infilato tutto nel mio stomaco!
• Insegnare è stato difficile per me perché dato che mi hanno fatto fare il programma accelerato al MTC, ci sono molte lezioni che non ho mai insegnato in francese. Così è tutto nuovo per me e ci sono un sacco di parole che non conosco e che devo imparare con l'andare del tempo. Sto facendo del mio meglio però e so che con il passare del tempo imparerò.
• Capire le persone sta diventando più facile anche se è proprio frustrante per me non essere capace ora di rispondere come vorrei. Amo parlare con la gente e ci sono tante battute che vorrei fare o cose che vorrei dire ma non posso perché non conosco il francese bene abbastanza. Così il più delle volte sono piuttosto silenziosa e non lo sopporto perché non sono una persona taciturna! Sono brava a parlare e a scrivere in inglese e quindi sono abituata a sapermi esprimere eloquentemente. È davvero difficile dover parlare una lingua straniera e di scoprire a metà frase di non conoscere abbastanza vocabolario per completare i miei pensieri o dovermi fermare per coniugare qualcosa nella mente. Non sono abituata a stentare nel dire qualcosa o a non essere capace di esprimermi. Così quello è stato davvero difficile per me ma sto cercando di essere paziente. So che imparare una lingua richiede tempo e che è così per molte persone all'inizio. So che Dio mi aiuterà! Con Dio le cose deboli diventano forti e so che Lui può compensare tutto ciò di cui manchiamo. Anche se è difficile ora so che devo solo perseverare. Un giorno non ci sarà più una barriera linguistica e non vedo l'ora!
• Così per coloro che se lo stiano chiedendo le persone qui parlano taitiano ma parlano e capiscono anche il francese. Le persone più anziane e quelle di mezz'età parlano tra loro spesso in taitiano. Non capisco la maggior parte di ciò che dicono, magari lo potessi, ma spero che con il tempo e lo studio un giorno sarò capace di farlo! Ma al momento mi devo concentrare a migliorare il francese così ciò è quello che sto facendo ora.
• Oggi io e Sorella Miller andremo con gli Anziani su una delle motus (piccole isole)! Sono molto emozionata, sarà molto divertente!

La vita qui a Huahine è fantastica! È così bello e le persone sono tanto gentili e generose. È triste però essere lontani dal resto dei missionari a Tahiti e sulle altre isole e non ci possiamo unire a loro per le conferenze e altre cose:( ma Sorella Miller è bravissima! Siamo amiche e non ci annoiamo mai così sono benedetta ad avere lei come mia addestratrice e collega. Inoltre i nostri amis (simpatizzanti) sono bravissimi e siamo vicine a fissare alcune date battesimali! Amo Huahine e sono fortunata a stare qui!

C'è la possibilità che il mio p-day venga spostato a mercoledì la prossima settimana così non vi allarmate se non vi scrivo lunedì.

Voglio solo concludere dicendo che so che il nostro Padre Celeste c'è e che ci ama!

 Ho parlato della preghiera a uno dei nostri simpatizzanti questa settimana. Amo la preghiera perché è davvero una conversazione con Dio. Non abbiamo bisogno di imparare a memoria niente, dobbiamo solo aprire direttamente il nostro cuore. Possiamo pregare Dio per tutto e dappertutto. Una volta qualcuno mi ha detto di pregare Dio come se stessi parlando al mio migliore amico così questo è quello che faccio! Gli parlo di tutto quello che fa parte della mia vita! La scuola, il lavoro, la missione, la famiglia, gli amici, i ragazzi, le preoccupazioni, le paure, le cose che mi rendono felice e così via. Dio ci ama e vuole che noi ci rivolgiamo a Lui. So che ascolta e so che risponde. Si può ricevere così tanta forza e aiuto con i problemi della vita tramite la preghiera. L'ho visto tante volte nella mia vita. Da quando ero  bambina ho sempre fatto in modo di pregare ogni sera prima di andare  a dormire. Fatene una priorità! E ogni volta che avete bisogno di aiuto o di un suggerimento riguardo a qualcosa Dio è solo a distanza di una preghiera. Non è forte?

Possiate trascorrere tutti una buona settimana! Qualcuno a casa vada a godere il cambio di colore delle foglie per me e a

mangiare qualcosa da Dunkin Donuts perché io non posso farlo! Non è autunno a meno che non siate in New England ;)

Email 7: Huahine, my new home!!

Ia orana everyone!! Sorry in advance if this email is super long but there’s tons to say! 

So last Monday night we got to Tahiti around 10pm after 13 hours of flying. It felt so humid when we got off the plane but I honestly can’t feel the humidity anymore! I don’t know if it’s just not humid where I am or if I got used to it. We had to wait until after midnight for the flight to come in with the missionaries from the New Zealand MTC. Those missionaries were all from France or native Tahitians. Then we went to sleep in the apartments at the temple and were up at 5:30 to get pictures taken for our carte jeune!(A document required to fly within French Polynesia  without a passport) So I essentially didn’t sleep for two days, because of the time difference I was up for 24 hours and then only got 2 or 3 hours of sleep Monday night. But c'est pas grave! 

Tuesday we hung out at the mission home because we had to get interviews done, then we went into downtown Pape’ete to buy our bikes and exchange our money and all that fun stuff. Pape’ete and Faaa kind of remind me of a more ghetto and tropical version of Sicily hahah. It’s super weird here because some people live in really simple houses that seem very poor but then they randomly have flat screen TVs, iPhones, and huge boom boxes. Tuesday we got all our area assignments and found out who our trainers are! I got assigned to Huahine and my trainer is Soeur Miller! Huahine is one of the outer islands in the mission but it’s only a 30 minute plane ride from Tahiti. Apparently lots of people want to serve there but never get to so I’m super lucky that I get to go there right off the bat! 

After we got our assignments we had to leave with our trainers. Saying goodbye to my MTC district was soooo sad. I love them so much! Luckily some of the elders are in my Zone so I’ll see them at Zone Conference! My trainer was on Huahine so Tuesday night I hung out with the STLs (Sister Training Leaders) and went to the airport Wednesday morning. Something I learned about Tahiti is that there’s always random chickens and roosters running around. And the roosters crow ALL DAY which is so annoying. So yeah I saw a random rooster at the airport which is weird because it’s in the middle of the city. 

I got to fly with the missionaries going to the islands of Tahaa and Raiatea which was fun! Seeing the islands from the air was sooo cool! Also at the airport I saw an American lady in a Patriots shirt so of course I went to talk to her. Turns out her son in law plays for the Patriots!! 

HUAHINE IS SO BEAUTIFUL. It is literally an island paradise. Pictures don’t even do it justice. I still look out at the palm trees and lagoons sometimes and wonder if I’m dreaming. My house here is so cute! It reminds me of a simpler version of the villa my family used to have in Rosa Marina (in Italy). Also there’s tons of Italian food and products here which makes me so happy!! Also I found 3 un-opened Nesquik boxes in the kitchen so I’m very happy. There’s isn’t really a bug problem in my house so that’s good. Although you will see the occasional 4 inch cockroach or gecko roaming around. The other day there was a huge spider the size of my palm on the porch and Elder Aubry was chasing me and Sister Miller around with it threatening to throw it on us. I was about to kill him!! There’s a whole gang of stray cats that likes to chill on our porch with all the chickens and roosters too. I’m super lucky because I’m in a car area! But apparently Elder Aubry has bad knees so we have to share the car with the elders. So Friday through Monday we have to bike. Biking in a skirt or dress is so hard! Also here it’s been super windy lately so yeah no bueno because then your skirt goes flying. 

Huahine only has 4 missionaries, 2 sisters and 2 elders. So in the house it’s just me and Soeur Miller. We get half the island and the elders get the other half. Soeur Miller has been out 8 months and she’s from Orem, Utah. She’s half-Tongan too! She is super awesome and we have lots of fun! The other elders are both from Tahiti, Elder Tekurio and Elder Aubry. Elder Tekurio can randomly speak Spanish and English really well. He’s trying to get me to teach him Italian too. When I asked how he learned the languages he says « by myself ». I asked him how he learned how to dance and play violin so well and he also said « by myself ». So he’s just a genius I guess. His life goal is to become a billionaire and it will probably happen someday. 

Lots of people here have told me my French is really good which is nice to hear. Although sometimes I have trouble understanding what people are saying because of the way they talk. But it’s ok, with time it will become much easier. A lot of people here speak French as well as Tahitian so I haven’t used Tahitian much yet. The people here are so nice!! Everyone says hi to each other even if they’re strangers. And the church members are so nice! They’re always giving us food so I never have to cook. And the other day my companion and I were out getting pizza and our landlord’s wife ran into us and payed for us! Everyone here is so awesome! 

We’ve been teaching a lot of people and tons of them are kids ages 8-12 which is unique but super fun! They are the cutest! 

Well I think that’s most of what’s happened! Sorry again for writing so much but there’s so much I want to tell everyone about! I feel so blessed! I have the best mission, best mission president, best area, and best companion! And I get to live on an island in the Pacific for the next little while so life is good.

               TRADUZIONE IN ITALIANO 

Ia orana a tutti! Mi scuso in anticipo se questo email sarà lunghissimo ma c'è tanto da dire!

Allora lunedì scorso siamo arrivati a Tahiti intorno alle 22 dopo 13 ore di volo. Era così umido quando siamo scesi dall'aereo ma sinceramente non sento più l'umidità! Non so se è perché non è umido dove mi trovo ora o se mi ci sono abituata. Abbiamo dovuto aspettare fino a dopo mezzanotte il volo con i missionari dal MTC della Nuova Zelanda. Quei missionari venivano tutti dalla Francia o erano nativi di Tahiti. Poi siamo andati a dormire negli appartamenti vicino al tempio e ci siamo alzati alle 5:30 per fare le foto per la nostra carte jeune!(Un documento che serve a volare nella Polinesia francese senza dover fare uso del passaporto) Così in pratica non ho dormito per due giorni perché a causa del cambio d'orario sono rimasta sveglia per 24 ore e poi ho avuto solo  2 o 3 ore di sonno lunedì notte. Ma non è grave!

Martedì siamo rimasti alla casa della missione perché dovevamo fare le interviste con il presidente, poi siamo andati in città a Pape'ete per comprare le nostre bici e cambiare i soldi e tutte queste cose divertenti. Pape'ete e Faa mi ricordano quasi una versione tropicale tipo ghetto della Sicilia ahahah. È stranissimo qui perché alcune persone vivono in case molto semplici che sembrano povere ma poi hanno televisori a schermo piatto, gli iPhone ed enormi stereo portatili. Martedì siamo stati assegnati alle nostre aree e abbiamo saputo chi è il collega che ci addestra! Sono stata assegnata a Huahine e la mia collega è Soeur Miller! Huahine è una delle isole esterne della missione ma è solo a 30 minuti di volo da Tahiti. A quanto pare molte persone vogliono servire lì ma non ci vanno mai quindi sono davvero molto fortunata ad andare lì proprio all'inizio.

Dopo aver avuto le nostre assegnazioni siamo dovuti andare via con i nostri colleghi. Dover lasciare il mio distretto del MTC è stato così triste! Li amo tanto! Fortunatamente alcuni degli Anziani sono nella mia zona così li vedrò alla Conferenza di Zona! La mia collega stava ad Huahine così martedì notte sono rimasta con le Sister Training Leaders e sono andata all'aereporto mercoledì mattina. Una cosa che ho imparato di Tahiti è che ci sono sempre galli e galline che scorrazzano in giro. E i galli cantano TUTTO IL GIORNO il che è fastidioso. Così sì, ho davvero visto un gallo all'aereoporto il che è strano perché è nel centro della città.

Ho preso il volo con i missionari che vanno sulle isole di Tahaa e Raiatea ed è stato divertente! Vedere le isole dall'alto è stato così forte! Anche all'aereoporto ho visto una signora americana con una maglietta dei Patriots (squadra di football di Boston) così ovviamente sono andata a parlare con lei. È venuto fuori che suo genero gioca per i Patriots!

HUAHINE È COSÍ  BELLA. È letteralmente un'isola da paradiso. Le foto non fanno neanche giustizia. Guardo ancora gli alberi di palme e le lagune a volte e mi chiedo se sto sognando. La mia casa qui è così carina! Mi ricorda una versione più semplice della villa che la mia famiglia aveva a Rosa Marina in Italia. C'è anche un sacco di cibo italiano e prodotti italiani il che mi rende molto felice!! Ho anche trovato 3 confezioni di Nesquik ancora chiuse in cucina così sono molto felice! Non abbiamo problemi con gli insetti a casa e questo è buono. Ciò nonostante occasionalmente si vedono scarafaggi lunghi 10 cm e anche i geco che gironzolano per casa. L'altro giorno sul patio c'era un ragno enorme grande quanto il palmo della mia mano e Anziano Aubry ha inseguito me e Sorella Miller con il ragno dicendo che ce lo avrebbe buttato addosso. Lo stavo per uccidere! C'è un'intera banda di gatti selvatici che ama venire a riposarsi sul nostro patio insieme ai galli e alle galline.
Sono molto fortunata perché sono in una zona (di missionari) con la macchina! Ma a quanto pare Anziano Aubry ha dei problemi alle ginocchia così dobbiamo condividere la macchina con gli Anziani e andiamo in bicicletta da venerdì a lunedì. Andare in bicicletta con il vestito o con la gonna è così difficile! Inoltre qui è stato super ventilato recentemente così sì, no bueno, perché la gonna vola.

Huahine ha solo 4 missionari, 2 sorelle e 2 anziani, così a casa ci siamo solo io e Sorella Miller. Visitiamo metà isola e gli anziani l'altra metà. Sorella Miller è in missione da 8 mesi e viene da Orem nello Utah. È anche per metà dalla Tonga! È fantastica e ci divertiamo un sacco! Gli altri anziani vengono entrambi da Tahiti, Anziano Tekurio e Anziano Aubry. Anziano Tekurio parla a volte  in spagnolo e inglese molto bene. Sta provando a farmi insegnare a lui anche l'italiano. Quando gli chiedo come abbia fatto ad imparare quelle lingue dice "da solo". Gli ho chiesto come abbia fatto ad imparare a ballare e a suonare il violino così bene e ha pure risposto "da solo". Quindi credo che sia un genio. Lo scopo della sua vita è di diventare un milionario e probabilmente ci riuscirà un giorno.

Un sacco di persone mi hanno detto che il mio francese è molto buono ed è piacevole sentirselo dire. Ma a volte ho difficoltà a capire cosa dice la gente per il modo in cui parla. Ma va bene, con il tempo diventerà sempre più facile. Molte persone qui parlano sia francese che taitiano così non ho parlato molto in taitiano ancora. La gente qui è così gentile!! Tutti si salutano anche se non si conoscono! E i membri in chiesa sono così bravi! Ci danno sempre cibo così non devo cucinare mai. L'altro giorno io e la mia collega eravamo fuori a prendere una pizza e la moglie del nostro padrone di casa si è imbattutta in noi e ha pagato per noi! Tutti qui sono così fantastici!

Abbiamo insegnato a un sacco di persone e moltissimi sono bambini dagli 8 ai 12 anni il che è particolare ma molto divertente! Sono i più carini!

Bene, penso che questo è tutto quello che è successo! Mi scuso ancora per aver scritto tanto ma c'è tanto che voglio dire! Mi sento così benedetta! Ho la missione migliore, il miglior presidente di missione e la migliore collega! E posso vivere su un'isola del Pacifico per un po' nell'immediato futuro così la vita è buona.

Vi amo e mi mancate tutti! Se mi mandate il vostro indirizzo proverò a mandarvi delle cartoline!
